Hannah Townsend

Also Hannah Underhill

Wife of Benjamin Underhill, whom she married in 1728 after intentions declared at the Westbury Friends' meeting on Long Island, probably the mother of Thomas Underhill (1735) and so grandmother of Sarah (Underhill) Frost. Probably a daughter of Thomas Townsend of Concord, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Her husband was disowned for drink in 1740, and she and her children moved to the Purchase Meeting in Westchester County.

Thomas Townsend d. 1732

The will of Thomas Townsend of Concord, Chester County, Pa., 1732, names "his daughter, Hannah Underhill" (abstract in the Underhill Genealogy 2:94). Probable rather than proven: the identification of that Hannah Underhill with Benjamin's wife rests on the name and the Long Island land.

Her father's wife Sarah, named in his will of 1732; the Underhill Genealogy calls Hannah "daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Pearsall) Townsend." Whether Sarah was her mother, and a Pearsall, is not shown.

Notes

Grandmother of Sarah (Underhill) Frost: the wife of Benjamin Underhill and mother of Thomas Underhill (1735). Their intentions of marriage were declared at the Westbury Friends’ meeting on the 27th of the 1st month and the 24th of the 2nd month 1728, and they married on the 29th of the 3rd month (29 May) 1728 (source, 2:94).

Her husband was disowned by Westbury Meeting for drink in 1740. She and her children moved to the Purchase Meeting in Westchester County, and on the 30th of the 3rd month 1763 the Westbury records gave her a removal certificate to Purchase, “having removed there some years ago. Her children included but not named”; she was perhaps the Hannah who had a certificate from Westbury to Mamaroneck (Purchase) on the 26th of the 2nd month 1749 (2:95). Her sons Thomas and John married the sisters Mercy and Deborah Dickinson of North Castle.
