Elizabeth Ide

Also Elizabeth Read

Second wife of Capt. Daniel Read, married 8 Dec 1715, and probably the mother of Daniel Read (c. 1716), who married Mary White. Born at Rehoboth, Massachusetts, a daughter of Timothy Ide and granddaughter of Nicholas Ide, she died in 1759, Capt. Read's widow, in her seventieth year.

Notes

Second wife of Capt. Daniel Read, married 8 Dec 1715. A granddaughter, not a daughter, of Nicholas Ide. Her identification as Daniel Read’s wife rests on her age: she died on 31 Dec 1759 “in her 70th y.” Mollie Pfeiffer’s typescript gives her the birth of 6 Apr 1658, which belongs to her aunt Elizabeth, Nicholas Ide’s daughter (Rehoboth VR p. 649), who could not have had children after 1715.

J. W. Reed (1861, pp. 234-235) lists her children with Capt. Daniel Read, born at Attleborough: Daniel, 3 Dec 1716; Noah, 17 Dec 1718; Elizabeth, 2 Apr 1721; Samuel, 18 May 1723 (died 1723); Abigail, 4 Apr 1725; Rachel, 10 June 1728; Benjamin, 21 Aug 1730; Ebenezer, 1733; and Thankful, 12 May 1737. He also prints a second “Daniel, 1726,” apparently a slip. The Attleborough births themselves have not been seen.

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about her checked against the records.

  1. Mollie makes her a daughter of Nicholas Ide, born 6 Apr 1658, married to Capt. Daniel Read in December 1715; the records show she was his granddaughter, born in 1690, and the 1658 birth was her aunt's.

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
Capt. Daniel Read's wife Elizabeth Ide was Nicholas's daughter, born 1658

That Elizabeth would have been 57 at the 1715 wedding. Daniel's wife was her niece Elizabeth, born 16 Mar 1689/90 to Timothy Ide and Elizabeth Cooper, so a granddaughter of Nicholas. She died 31 Dec 1759 "in her 70th y."
