Elizabeth Smith
Wife of John Whitney, the Norwalk miller, whom she married at Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1674/5, and mother of his ten children, probably among them Eleanor (Whitney) Fairchild. Probably a daughter of Richard Smith, she was a widow by 1725 and still living in 1741, when her son Joseph provided for her support. Her great-grandson Jonathan was possibly the Jonathan Fairchild who settled East Jewett.

Notes
Wife of John Whitney, the Norwalk miller, and mother of Eleanor (Whitney) Fairchild. She married John at Norwalk on 17 March 1674/5 and bore him ten children. When John sold the grist mill to their son Joseph in 1713, Joseph undertook “after ye decease of ye said John Whitne, to maintain his mother, Elizabeth Whitne (if she survive) Honourably During her natural life, if she Remaine ye sd John Whitne’s widdow.” As a widow she was a member of the First Congregational Church at Norwalk in 1725, and she was still living on 3 April 1741, when Joseph’s codicil provided for her (source).
The family’s descent from her rests on the identification of Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett with her great-grandson Jonathan, born at Norwalk in 1744, which is only possible (see Jonathan Fairchild).
