Notes

Born at Lochaber, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, about 1812-1816, just after his father and others from Lochaber in Scotland had settled the lake there and named it. He married Mary McMillan in 1839, and in 1845 brought the family to Wisconsin, to a farm in Calamus Township, Dodge County, where the Calamus McMillans were a cluster of Antigonish families. His son Malcolm, 18, of Co. C, 16th Wisconsin Infantry, was wounded at Shiloh and died at Camp Dennison, Ohio, on 11 May 1862 (record).

Mary died in September 1872. In the summer of 1874 Duncan went back to Lochaber and married Mary Ann Cameron there; the register names his parents, Malcolm and Mary (record). In 1877 he rented out the farm and retired to Beaver Dam, and in 1886 he married a third time, Maggie Heinig. His own account of his life is in the 1880 county history (source). He died at Beaver Dam on 19 November 1889 (record).

Open questions

  • Mary Ann Cameron’s death; his grave (Mary’s is at Leipsig Cemetery) and probate (Dodge County, 1889-90); Daniel’s death.
  • Above Malcolm nothing is documented. The FamilySearch chain above him (John McMillan and Ann Kennedy, a Duncan of Stevenston and Shelburne, a Malcom John of Kintyre and North Carolina, a John of Bute) joins unrelated men and is disproven.
