The line

The ancestry of Lucile McMillan (1905-1996), Frances Holbrook’s mother. Two streams met in Walworth County, Wisconsin: Highland Scots by way of Nova Scotia, and Long Island Quakers by way of the Hudson valley and the Catskills. Both went on to the Pacific coast, and Lucile was born at Tacoma, where her father and uncle ran McMillan Bros., druggists.

The line at a glance

McMillan. Malcolm McMillan, a settler of Lochaber, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, about 1810 > Duncan McMillan (b. c. 1812-1816, Lochaber; to Calamus, Dodge County, Wisconsin, 1845; d. 1889, Beaver Dam) > William McMillan (1841-1927), farmer and teacher in Iowa, then of Tacoma > Alfred Ross McMillan (1884-1966), of McMillan Bros., druggists of Tacoma > Lucile. William married Harriet Ellen Adams, granddaughter of the Humphreys and Enoses of Connecticut.

Frost. William Frost of Setauket and Matinecock, Long Island (d. 1719), and Rebecca Wright > William (1674-1728) > Isaac (1717), a Quaker of Mill River Neck and then Dutchess County > George (1760-1830) > George (1791-1860), of Rensselaerville and Heart Prairie, Wisconsin > Stephen George (1826-1919) > George William (1850-1925), banker at Cloverdale and Santa Cruz, California, then of Spokane > Florence (1885-1957), who married Alfred McMillan at Spokane in 1904. Florence’s parents were second cousins: both descend from Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett, Greene County, New York.

How sure it is

The McMillan-Frost research file (research/mcmillan/McMillan_Frost_Master_Research.md, October 2026) proves every link from Lucile to Duncan McMillan, Robert Adams and Caroline Humphrey, Stephen G. Frost, Richard Fairchild and William H. Bell from census, marriage, death and draft records, and Duncan’s parents’ names from three records of his own. The Frost line above George (1791) rests on Josephine Frost’s Frost Genealogy (1912) and is compiled, as are the Fairchild descent from Jonathan and the Humphrey and Enos generations. Disproven, and left out: the FamilySearch McMillan chain above Malcolm; the “Capt.” John Bell given as William H. Bell’s father; George Frost’s (1760) Revolutionary pension.

Open questions

  • Malcolm McMillan’s origin in Scotland (probably Kilmallie, Lochaber), and Mary McMillan’s parents (probably William McMillan and Penuel MacDougall of Glen Urquhart).
  • When McMillan Bros. was founded and closed; whether Alfred or Everett was a licensed pharmacist.
  • William and Harriet’s marriage year (1862 or 1865).
  • George W. Frost’s “pistol accident” at Santa Cruz, 1887, and his business at Spokane.
  • Lucile’s first marriage, to Harold Oscar Smith at Tacoma in 1925.
