The FamilySearch tree's; no record seen.

Great-grandfather of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood, as the evidence stands. He and his wife Jean Clark, "natives of Roxburghshire," lie under one tall column at Dixon's Union Cemetery, Caledon (record): he died on 16 December 1841, aged 76, and she on 1 May 1844, aged 74. Caledon is where their daughter Jane married Halkett Pattullo in 1833 and where the Pattullos farmed. The children Find a Grave gives them fit a marriage in 1793, which the FamilySearch tree places at Eckford (source):

  • Margaret (22 Aug 1796 - 11 Feb 1879), wife of Andrew Buckham, "a native of Eckford, Roxburghshire," by her gravestone at Mayfield, near Brampton;
  • James (1800 - 4 Dec 1876), "a native of Roxburghshire," buried at Dixon's Union Cemetery with his wife Esther Dixon, perhaps on the same column as his parents; his children included Thomas Clark Robson;
  • Euphemia (1803-1889), wife of William Foster, buried at the Melville White Church, Caledon; her children included Jane Clark Foster and Thomas R. Foster;
  • Jane (2 Apr 1809, Eckford - 4 Apr 1879), wife of Halkett Pattullo.

Grandchildren named Thomas Clark, Jane Clark and Thomas Robson, in three of the four families, carry both his and his wife's names.

Research: Ruth Short's ancestry: the archive, the Ancestry tree, WikiTree and FamilySearch compared.

Open questions

  • When the Robsons came to Upper Canada: the Eckford register (Jane's baptism, 1809, and her brothers' and sisters') and the 1793 marriage. Margaret's husband Andrew Buckham, also of Roxburghshire, may have come with them.
  • Whether James and his wife are on the same column as Thomas and Jean (the other faces).
  • The verse on the base of the stone, too worn to read in the photographs.
