John was the eldest child of Daniel Cole of Eastham, born there on 15 July 1644, the year after his father moved from Yarmouth. His brothers and sisters were Timothy (1646), Hepzibah (1649), Ruth (1651), Israel (1653), James (1655), Mary (1659, m. Joshua Hopkins) and William (1663) (record, source). On 12 Dec 1666 he married Ruth Snow, probably a daughter of Nicholas and Constance (Hopkins) Snow. Their son Joseph was born on 11 June 1677, and a daughter Ruth married William Twining (Paine).
King Philip's War. His brother Timothy probably went to the war: in 1733 "Timothy Cole for his father Timothy" claimed an Eastham right at Narragansett Township No. 7 (Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 439; see Daniel Cole). His wife's brother Mark Snow sat on Eastham's council of war, and her nephew John Walker was killed with Capt. Michael Pierce on 26 Mar 1676 (see Nicholas Snow).
In old age he settled his lands on his son: on 20 July 1713, "In Consideration of my Reall Love & good will unto my naturall son Joseph Cole of Eastham," and on 29 Jan 1714/15 his right in "the Lands lying in the Township of Harwich that my Hon'd father Daniel Cole Died seized of" (record). He was the great-grandfather of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw.
Research: Cape Cod ancestry of Hope Holdershaw and Hannah Brown.
