- Brigham. Her death record names her mother "Hannah Ginn," the right surname but probably the informant's slip for Sally.
Wife of Capt. Nathan Low of Deer Isle, Maine, and mother of Harriet Phillips Low. They were married at Deer Isle on 16 Sept 1832 (the Maine vital records index); the marriage is recorded on his file. Brigham: "born Dec. 12, 1809; died April 9, 1886; married Captain Nathan Lowe, of Deer Isle, Maine, who died after a disaster to a boat." Mollie says she "was engaged to teach school at Deer Isle," and that some of her relatives thought she had married beneath her.
Mollie's typescript has the marriage typed as Feb 25, 1835 and pencilled as Oct 4, 1832. Feb 25, 1835 is the wedding date of her brother Frederick to Diadamia P. Emery (Brigham no. 1963); Oct 4, 1832 agrees with Mollie's own Low chart. The record gives 16 Sept 1832.
In 1850 she was "Hannah H. [R.]," 40, at Deer Isle with her husband and their ten children. She signed "Hannah R Low" on her petition to administer his estate in November 1875. She died at Beverly, Massachusetts, where her sons Daniel W. and Joseph E. had settled, and was buried at Deer Isle. On 17 Jan 1887 her son Rowland T. Low asked the Hancock County probate court for leave to sell her Deer Isle land to pay her debts, there being "no personal estate in said Deer Isle"; the heirs were her eight living lines, each to "one eighth part." Her daughter Harriet's power of attorney for the same sale was recorded in Penobscot County, which suggests she also owned land there, perhaps Tyler land at Dixmont.
Before her marriage she taught school, at Nahant and then at Deer Isle, where she met Nathan Low.
Named for her grandmother Hannah (Read) Tyler. Mollie recalled that grandmother's lost will as saying "To my granddaughter, Hannah Read Tyler, I leave a silver spoon." That is family tradition; the will has not been found.
Her mother's parentage is unresolved (see Sally Ginn's file), so everything on the Ginn side of her ancestry is provisional.
Open questions
- Her birth record at Dixmont.
- Her Hancock County estate file beyond Rowland's petition, and any Penobscot County land.
- Bristol County probate for Hannah (Read) Tyler, 1822: does the will exist, and does it leave her the spoon?
