Son of Capt. Nathan Low and Hannah Read Tyler. (The Deer Isle families typescript says one of his father's sisters married an Elkins.) In 1870 he and his wife Anna M. were in his parents' household at Deer Isle. In 1887 his minor children, Henry H., Charles S., Frederic H., Augustus R., Frank S., Grace D., Lucy S. and Joseph E. Lowe, of Beverly, Massachusetts, inherited one-eighth of their grandmother Hannah's estate, with their uncle Daniel W. Low as guardian.
