- Richard Raymond 1 (p. 4): “Salem, Mass., mariner. Freeman, May 14, 1634. Jan. 2, 1636, the town granted him half an acre of land at Winter Harbor (now known as Winter Island in Salem harbor), ‘for fishing trade and to build upon.’ In 1636 he received a further grant of 60 acres of land at Jeffries Creek (now Manchester). He and his wife Judith …. were members of the First Church, Salem, before 1636. In 1660 he sold one quarter part of ‘the good Ketch called the Hopewell of Salem, of the burthen of thirty tons, now being or riding at anchor in the harbor of Boston.’ Oct. 20, 1662, he purchased a house and land at Norwalk, Conn., and probably removed there soon after, where he engaged in a coastwise trade with the Dutch and English settlers on Manhattan Island. In 1664 he removed to Saybrook. His children were all baptized in the First Church, Salem, excepting John, the date of whose birth is unknown.” Children: John 2; Bathsheba bapt. 6 Aug 1637; Joshua 3, bapt. 3 Mar 1639; Lemuel; Hannah (m. Oliver Manwaring); Samuel; Richard; Elizabeth; Daniel 4, bapt. 17 Apr 1653. “Richard Raymond d. at Saybrook in 1692 æ. abt. 90.” The book calls him “a mariner, was probably master, and certainly part owner of the ketch Hopewell,” and says “It is said that he made voyages to Barbadoes” (p. 2).
- John 2 (pp. 4-5): “His father’s will of 1676 gave all his lands in Norwalk ‘unto those children which my son John already have, or may have, by Mary Raymond, his present wife.’ He m., Dec. 10, 1664, Mary, dau. of Thomas Betts of Norwalk, and had John 5, b. Sept. 9, 1665. Samuel 6, b. July 7, 1673. Thomas 7, b. abt. 1678 … There is a deed on file in the Records of Norwalk, dated 1699, from John, Samuel, Thomas and Hannah Raymond to William Haynes.”
- Samuel 6 (p. 6): “son of John 2, Norwalk, Conn., m. Apl. 1, 1696, Judith, dau. of Ephraim Palmer, of Greenwich, and had Samuel 12, b. May 7, 1697. John, b. Feb. 12, 1699 … Ephraim, b. Sept. 9, 1701. Joshua 13, b. prob. abt. 1702. Mary, b. abt. 1705, m. John Brown, May 6, 1729.”
- Ephraim 20 (p. 9): “probably the son of Ephraim, son of Samuel 6. He was b. at Norwalk, Ct., abt. 1730, m. Betty Hanford … He was 2d Lt. of militia, 1775, and at the first independent town election in Bedford, Apl. 7, 1784, he was elected an assessor.”
- Joshua 3 and the Perry line (pp. 5-9): Joshua, bapt. at Salem 1639, of New London, m. Elizabeth Smith; his son Joshua 8 of Block Island m. Mercy Sands; “a dau. m. Freeman Perry, whose 3d son, Christopher Raymond Perry, was the father of Commodores Oliver H. and Matthew C. Perry.”
- Henry J. Raymond (p. 100): “established N. Y. Times … Speaker State Assembly, 1851 … elected member of Congress, 1864 … Lt. Governor N. York, 1855-57.”
