What it says
Read in the archive.org full text. Hassam prints the family Bible of William Downes Cheever, which says that Bartholomew Cheever came from Canterbury in 1637, “He having no Children of his Own in 1667 He sent to Canterbury to his Brother Daniell for One of his sons, the 2 first refused Coming his 3d & youngest son Richard then 7 year Old, accepted, and in 1668 Came over to his uncle,” that “Richard Cheever Was Born in Mercerey Lane in the Citty of Canterbury 1660,” that “Richard and Abigail Cheever was mareyed 7 October 1680,” and that “Richard Cheever died in France, Taken in his Way Home to England, about the year 1704.” He calls it “an amusing mixture of fact and fancy” and corrects it from the records: “The father of Richard Cheever could not have been Bartholomew’s brother Daniel, for the names of the children of the latter are distinctly mentioned in the wills of the two brothers, and they were, so far as is now known, all born in New England” (p. 307).
From the records (pp. 307-310): Bartholomew Cheever, cordwainer, died 18 Dec 1693; his will (No. 2108) left “The house that Rich. Cheever lives in” in Conduit Street to “cousin” Richard, and the pasture near the Mill Dam to “Cousin Ezekiel Cheever schoolmaster.” “Richard Cheever, of Boston, cordwainer”: in the Treasurer’s accounts for King Philip’s War, 24 June and 24 Aug 1676; a surveyor for Boston 1683/4; tithingman 1685 and 1694/5; sealer of leather 1691/2; constable 1692/3; paid “for his having been sent twice with expresses to Piscataqua” (25 Feb 1702), and for letters “on her Majesty’s service” to Ipswich, Plymouth, Newbury, Piscataqua and New London (1703); allowed horse hire for a journey to Dracut (1706). He sold the Conduit Street house on 6 June 1704. “Administration (No. 3189) on his estate, which was appraised at £2192: 2: 5, was granted Aug. 8, 1709, to his widow Abigail. She died a widow Jan. 21, 1732-3, aet. 73, according to the entry in the Cheever bible.” Their children, all born in Boston: Bartholomew 1681 (d. young); “Susanna, b. Aug. 27, 1682; m. in Boston, January 26, 1709, Robert Rand”; Bartholomew 1684, sugar baker; Mary 1686; Sarah 1689 (m. Daniel Pecker); Mary 1691 (m. Andrew Cunningham); Abigail 1694; Daniel 1696; James 1698; Hannah 1699; Hannah 1702. The Bible’s own entry for Abigail: “this morning my Honered mother Departed this Life … in the 73 year of her age Abigal Cheever.”
