What it says
The manuscript Rev. Dr Duncan Black Blair, minister at Blue Mountain, Pictou County, wrote for William
Mackay about 1890. “William MacMillan, the brother of Ann, wife of Donald Campbell, married Penuel
MacDougall, the sister of John MacDougall the elder at Blue Mountain. He emigrated to Nova Scotia from
Glenurquhart in 1818, and took up his residence at the South River of Antigonish … After his death,
his widow with the youngest son Alpine removed to Illinois in the United States” (pp. 448-449). The elder
John McDougall “was the youngest son of John McDougall and Euphemia Bethune, who lived at a place
called Ailean mór in Glenurquhart”; his sisters included “Penuel who married William MacMillan and came
to Antigonish” (p. 446). Their father “was a blacksmith and it seems had some connection with the army
or Volunteers; for he lived in Edinburgh with the Regiment to which he belonged and there he died”; the
youngest son was born after his death, on 15 Mar 1805 (pp. 446-447). Dobson’s Directory of Scottish
Settlers cites this source. (research/mcmillan/McMillan_Humphrey_Bell_Connections.md)
