Notes
Brother of Winifred (Flynn) Dwyer, born at St. Joseph, Missouri, in December 1897, 19 December by his
burial record. In August 1917 he was a corporal in Company B, the St. Joseph company of the 6th
Missouri Infantry, which became part of the 140th Infantry, 35th Division. In the Vosges in the
summer of 1918, as commander of a combat group, he reported the American flag raised on a sniper
house in No Man’s Land: “The Flag Flies. ’Twas a narrow escape. … The flag went up just the same.”
In February 1919 Sergeant Richard T. Flynn, of 1919 Union Street, St. Joseph, was on the casualty
list, his wife Marie E. Flynn his next of kin. He served on as a reserve officer: at Fort Mason, San
Francisco, from 1941, in the Quartermaster Corps; assistant inspector general in Korea, 1953-54, and
inspector general at Fort Lewis, 1954-55. He retired as a colonel on 31 October 1957, died at Denver on
11 May 1996, and is buried with Marie (1895-1989), a Marine Corps veteran, at Fort Logan National
Cemetery (source). No one record names his parents; that
the soldier is this son of William C. Flynn is probable, from his name, town, birth, death and wife
(research/dwyer/Flynn_Family_Connections.md).
