Joshua Riggs

Of Gloucester, Massachusetts, son of Thomas Riggs and probably of Ann Wheeler. He married Experience Stanwood on 23 Oct 1735, and eleven children of theirs were recorded at Gloucester from 1737 to 1758, among them Ann, who married James Ginn. In 1752 he was guardian of Jonathan Stanwood, who was non compos mentis.

Notes

Of Gloucester. On 17 Oct 1752, “Joshua Riggs, guardian of Jonathan Stanwood, non-compos mentis, petitioned the court to be allowed to sell Jonathan’s property to pay his debts.” The debts exceeded the estate by £22-9-4. After Jonathan died in 1760, Joshua sold a further piece of his land (Bolton, Stanwood Family, p. 40). The ward, Jonathan Stanwood (b. 27 Sept 1696), was a son of Jonathan Stanwood and Mary Nichols, which made him a first cousin of Joshua’s father-in-law, James Stanwood (inference from Bolton’s numbering).

Dec 25, 1756); Lucy, May 9, 1758.
