Joseph Nickerson

Probably the youngest son of William Nickerson, the founder of Chatham, Massachusetts, born at Yarmouth in 1647. He lived at Monomoy (Chatham) and East Harwich and from 1697 at Muddy Cove, Harwich, where he died between 1725 and 1731; reputed a quiet, peaceable man, he was nearly ruined by his wife Ruhamah's quarrels with the neighbours. Probably the father of John Nickerson and great-grandfather of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw.

Notes

Great-grandfather of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw. The youngest son of William Nickerson, born at Yarmouth in 1647, he went with his father to Monomoy (Chatham) and lived on land his father gave him north of Ryder’s Cove, then for some years in East Harwich; in 1697 he bought fifty acres at Muddy Cove from Barnabas Lothrop for £25 in silver and stayed there the rest of his life. He also owned lots 6 and 16 in the Quason Purchase. “Little is known about him, but he was reputed to be a quiet, peaceable man” (source), unlike his wife Ruhamah, whose quarrels with the neighbours nearly cost him his estate when he had to give security for her; he petitioned, and the matter was abated. He gave land on the north side of the Muddy Cove River to his son William “for & in Consideration of my Real Love and Goodwill.”
