Notes
Tanner, of Dorchester by 1634 (Savage; Mollie Pfeiffer says 1637). Savage: “Dorchester 1634, tanner, whose pits were employ. by six generat. of most worthy descend.; was from Wendover, Co. Bucks, where he was, it is said, the constable, came with ch. James, Jonas, and prob. Eliz. and Susanna.” His will, dated 12 Mar and proved 17 Apr 1662, “names only w. s. Jonas, gr-ch. Eliz. Foy and d. Susanna, w. of Nicholas White” (Savage’s abstract). Mollie’s “glover” has not been verified.
His first wife Frances is named in the Dorchester records: “Sarah, the daughter of Jonas Humphrey & Frances his wife was Buried (7th.) 1638,” that is, in September 1638. The baptism of 1587 and the marriage of 1607 given above come only from modern compiled trees.
