Notes

“Machinist,” aged 25, in his widowed mother’s household at Plymouth in August 1850, beside his brother Richard. In 1849 “Elisha Holbrook, of Plymouth … Yeoman” sold David Clark his ninth of his father’s land for $200, “reserving to my mother Nancy Holbrook the use, income and improvement” of it for five years, “provided she so long live” (deed). He stayed at Manomet until at least 1864, buying out several of his brothers’ and sisters’ shares of their father’s estate, among them Richard’s in 1855. Later in California. His cenotaph at Manomet reads “Died at Port Harford Cal. June 7, 1887, Aged 63 y’rs 5 mo’s 11 days.” A San Francisco funeral record of 8 June 1887 calls him single, a laborer of Santa Rosa.

A letter of January 1854 from Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, to his mother, signed “E. Holbrook,” a brother of Capt. Richard B. Holbrook, is filed under his brother Eliphalet; it could be his.

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. By the will Mollie copies, his mother left the rest of her estate to Elisha and his sister Mary in equal shares, as the children who had chiefly supported her.

All the rest, residence and (?) of all the estate I may leave at my decease whether real or personal, to my son Elisha Holbrook, and to my daughter Mary Holbrook in equal shares.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Gideon came from Wellfleet with his uncle Naaman and inherited his house

Partly supported. Gideon was born at Wellfleet about 1765 (his daughter Mary's death record), and Naaman Holbrook of Plymouth, another Wellfleet Holbrook, is in the records. No record yet shows that Naaman was his uncle or left him a house. The deeds show Gideon's son Elisha, not Eliphalet, buying the other heirs' shares (Richard's in 1855).
