Notes
Of Manomet, where his unmarried sister Mary lived with him and died, in January 1899; her obituary notes that “Of her four brothers only one, Eliphalet Holbrook, of Manomet, survives her” (Adadourian, 1899). Children: M. Elizabeth (1855-1946), Hattie Maria (1857-1863), George Eliphalet (1859-1866), Etta May (1865-1924) and Florence (1871-1944).
The letter of 1854. In January 1854 “E. Holbrook,” brother of Capt. Richard B. Holbrook, wrote from Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, to his mother in Massachusetts: he and his brother “have a good comfortable log cabin to live in”; “letters are brought down by private conveyance”; there were “31 vessels running between here and San Francisco”; and “the best soil I have seen is on [Whidbey] Island.” The letter is quoted in the National Park Service’s Historic Resources Study of Ebey’s Landing (2005), from the WPA’s Told by the Pioneers, vol. 2, pp. 153-154 (compiled; source).
Open questions
- Which brother was “E. Holbrook” of the 1854 letter, Eliphalet or Elisha? The letter gives only the initial. Eliphalet married at Worcester in October 1854; Elisha was at Plymouth in 1849 and 1850 and bought Richard’s share of their father’s land in 1855. The full letter in Told by the Pioneers may say more.
- His marriage record (Worcester, 11 Oct 1854) is still to be attached.
