Notes

Wife of James Bate and mother of Mary (Bate) Foster. She married James Bate by licence on 13 Sept 1603 as “Alice Glover of Saltwood” (Watkins, NEHGR 51:270), which supports the maiden name Glover that Mollie gives her.

She came with her husband and children on the Elizabeth in 1635, aged 52. “Alice Bate” is in the early list of members of the Dorchester church (Records of the First Church at Dorchester). Her son Richard Bate of Lydd, jurat, left “unto my mother Alice Bate in New England twelve pounds yearly during her life” (will of 19 June 1656, proved 3 Apr 1657; NEHGR 51:268).

Mollie's typescript· 1 passage

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families.

  1. Mollie gives her as Alice Glover, born in England in 1583 and married to James Bate in 1603, dying at Saltwood (?) in 1657, though the shipping list shows she came over with him (the records give her death at Dorchester).

Married 1603, Eng. Alice Glover born in England 1583 Died Saltwood (?) 1657 ... One account says his wife died in England, but the shipping list says not.
