Notes
Of the Chebacco Cogswells, who descend from John Cogswell of the Angel Gabriel, wrecked at Pemaquid in 1635; the Cogswell Genealogy (1884) gives the steps John > William > Adam. This Cogswell line is not in Mollie’s typescript.
“Mr. Cogswell was a trustee of the parish, a selectman of the town, and held a captain’s commission. Mrs. Cogswell was a member of the church” (Jameson p. 29). He is “Lt. Adam” in the records of 1710 and 1720 and “Capt. Adam” when his wife died in 1729. The book gives his children as Caleb, William (d. young), Abigail (m. Thomas Varney), Adam, Jeremiah, Katharine, Mary and William. It leaves his wife’s surname blank (“He married Abigail .”); her identification as Abigail Wise rests on the Ipswich VR marriage of 1686 and Anderson (TAG 56).
Three of his sons died on the same day, 5 Oct 1720: Joseph aged 21, Benjamin 19 and Stephen 16, each entered from their gravestones as “s. Lt. Adam and Abigail.” Another son, Adam, had died on 4 Feb 1709/10 aged 19. The records give no cause (Ipswich VR 2:527-528).
