Susanna Hawkes
Wife of William Cogswell of Chebacco, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and probably the mother of Adam Cogswell, as the Cogswell genealogy has it. Probably a daughter of Adam Hawkes and Anne, widow of Thomas Hutchinson, whose family was at Charlestown by 1634 and at Lynn about 1636. Notes
Wife of William Cogswell of Chebacco, and named as the mother of Adam Cogswell in the Cogswell Genealogy (Jameson, 1884, p. 28). Her family was at Charlestown by 1634 and moved to Lynn about 1636 (Anderson, Great Migration 3:253-257, as cited on WikiTree).
In 1675 James Coleman, who had served her husband “5 yeares prentice & covenaunted servant,” testified that their orphaned nephew John Cogswell “were a very sickly child till he was 14 yeares of age so that my mistress was very tender of him as if it were her own child” (Essex Quarterly Courts 6:68).
In 1693 the Chebacco committee that assigned the meeting-house seats gave her a seat with the minister’s wife (Jameson p. 10). The minister was Rev. John Wise, brother of her son Adam’s wife Abigail.
