About it

A clearing on the edge of the swamp below Mount Hope, with a low stone marker among the brush. The book’s caption: “The monument is placed on the firm land bordering the swamp, but a few rods distant from the spot where he fell.” The plate is printed sideways on the page, as in the book. Before dawn on 12 August 1676 Benjamin Church’s company, English and Native, surrounded the swamp where Philip had taken refuge, and he was shot as he ran by Alderman, one of Church’s Native soldiers. His death ended the war in southern New England. Lt. Isaac Howland of Middleborough served under Church that summer; it was from Mount Hope that Philip had written to Capt. Hopestill Foster of Dorchester in 1672, asking for cloth for a coat.
