Notes
Lieutenant, of Middleborough. Called “Joseph Bennet Junr” in his children’s births. On 21 May 1735 “Joseph Bennet, Jr., yeoman,” stood surety on Samuel Wood’s three £200 guardianship bonds for Joseph, Jeremiah and Isaac Howland, minors, sons of the late Isaac Howland Jr. of Middleborough (Plymouth Probate 7:137, abstracted in MD 17:190).
Three of his children died young: William (b. 9 June 1727) at ten weeks; Joseph on 19 Nov 1737; and Priscilla on 16 May 1745, entered as “Daughter of Leiut Joseph Bennet by Thankfull” (MD 7:243; 15:24). He himself died on 3 Jan 1741/2, aged about 38, intestate and insolvent, leaving his widow Thankful with Lucy, 16, and younger children. As administratrix she reported that his personal estate was “not Sufficient for the payment of his just debts,” got leave of the Superior Court to sell his land, and sold it at public vendue to Seth Samson of Middleborough (recorded 18 Dec 1746).
