Notes

Wife of Matthias Ellis of Middleborough. Her father died on 3 Jan 1741/2, when she was 16, intestate and insolvent. Her mother Thankful, as administratrix, reported his personal estate “not Sufficient for the payment of his just debts” and sold his land at public vendue to Seth Samson, “the highest Bidder” (recorded 18 Dec 1746); she married Samson in 1758. That she is the Lucia Bennett born in 1725 rests on the compiled marriage (Bosworth database, citing Genealogies of Mayflower Families 1:665), on Weston’s catalogue (“Lucia Ellis, wid. of Matthias, m. 1743, o. Bennet, mo. 273,” no. 273 being Thankful Bennet), and on the Bennett land she and Matthias sold in 1758 and 1763 with Elizabeth Morton and John Bennett the second, who fit her sister Elizabeth (b. 1731) and brother John (b. 1733/4).

Her dower in her husband’s insolvent estate was set off in April 1791. Weston’s catalogue also ties her to her son George: “Phebe Thomas, w. Azel … o. Ellis, dau. of Geo., gr. mo. 623,” 623 being Lucy.

Through her father the family descends from John Howland, Elizabeth Tilley, and John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley of the Mayflower.
