Stephen was born at Scituate on 5 Nov 1654, a son of Isaac Chittenden.
King Philip's War. He was twenty when the war began, and it cost him a brother and, before 1676 was out, his father. That spring his father and his future father-in-law, Lt. Isaac Buck, were Scituate's press masters (Deane p. 121). Benjamin Chittenden, probably his brother, was killed with Capt. Michael Pierce near Pawtucket on 26 Mar 1676 (Rev. Noah Newman's letter, in Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 359; Deane pp. 122-123, 232). His father sat on a Scituate coroner's jury on 29 July and died that autumn, before 1 Nov 1676, when administration of his estate went to Martha and Israel Chittenden (Records of the Colony of New Plymouth 5:211, 225-226; see Isaac Chittenden).
On 6 Nov 1679 he married "Mehetable Bucke." Their children, from the Scituate records (VR 1:67-68): Rebekah 1680, Thomas 1683, Mehetable 1686, Sarah 1688, Jael 1691, Martha 1694.
On 9 July 1695 he and his brother-in-law Joseph Garrett were sworn as administrators of his father-in-law Lt. Isaac Buck's estate, and they returned the inventory (Plymouth County Probate 1:222, transcribed in Byron Buck's genealogy).
Isaac Chittenden has long been said to have fallen in the defence of Scituate on 20 May 1676; he lived into the autumn.
