Daughter of Joseph Wise, the Roxbury butcher, and probably of Mary Tompson, baptized at Roxbury in October 1658, one of their twelve children (source). Her brother was Rev. John Wise of Chebacco, and her sisters included Mary, wife of Caleb Lamb, and Abigail, wife of Adam Cogswell.
King Philip's War. She was a girl of seventeen when it began. Her brother Jeremiah was credited under Capt. Daniel Henchman in November 1675, and her brother Rev. John Wise went out as chaplain with the Connecticut army in January 1675/6 (see Joseph Wise); Richard Mather, whom she would marry, rode in Capt. Thomas Prentice's troop in the same campaign.
On 1 July 1680 she married Richard Mather of Dorchester, a grandson of Rev. Richard Mather. Their children were born at Dorchester: Capt. Timothy (March 1680/1), Elizabeth (20 Nov 1682), Samuel (January 1683/4) and Joseph (1686) (source). The family moved to Lyme, where Richard bought land in 1687 and died the next year (source).
Through her the Hatten line meets the Low line. Her son Capt. Timothy Mather's descendants, the Mathers and Marvins of Lyme, lead to Ruth (Marvin) Philbrick of Ohio and Minnesota, probably Pickett Marvin's daughter; her sisters Mary and Abigail are ancestors of Harriet Low.
Research: Notable connections of Patricia Hatten (1940-2009): the paternal Hatten line.
