(L. C.) is the Short family stone,
gravestone-john-short-1858, which stands in this cemetery. - Hon. Andrew Jeffrey, memorial 186308963, Cobourg Union Cemetery. His stone: “IN MEMORIAM / HON. ANDREW JEFFREY / BORN AT / FOULDEN, SCOTLAND / FEB. 17TH 1800 / DIED JULY 27TH 1863 / HIS WIFE / JANET HALL / BORN 1799 / DIED 1851” (photograph by USCRx). - William Jeffrey (1772-1852), the husband, has a memorial with no photograph. Its gravesite note: “Mary Edna Lyall’s entry on this obelisk states ‘wife of’ William Jeffrey. However, there is no evidence that William is actually buried in this cemetery and he is certainly not among those interred in this plot.”
- Andrew Jeffrey, memorial 195119208, Chirnside Parish Churchyard, Berwickshire. Born 9 Dec 1734, Fogo; died 12 Feb 1810, Chirnside, aged 75. No photograph. Andrew Jeffery smith and feuer in Chirnside 12.2.1810 76 yrs. son Peter Jeffrey 1811 49 yrs.” No family links are shown in the screenshot.
What it adds:
- Foulden, on a stone. Andrew Jeffrey, mayor of Cobourg and Mary (Jeffrey) Short’s brother, was “born at Foulden, Scotland” in 1800, as the family accounts say all the children were.
- More of William and Mary’s children: a son William (1802-1879) of King Township and a daughter Catharine “Addie” (1806-1882), Mrs. Hall. A second son contradicts John Graham’s “one boy and four girls” (Skinner). Find a Grave’s links are compiled, but William’s dates, Scottish birth and Presbyterian burial fit.
- Mary Lyall’s monument is the Halls’ monument. Catharine Jeffrey (Mrs. Adam Hall) and her husband are on one face, Mary Lyall “wife of William Jeffrey” and Isabella Hall, “dau. of Adam & Catharine Hall,” on another: a stone that ties Mary Lyall to Catharine Jeffrey as mother and daughter in all but words. Andrew Jeffrey’s first wife was a Janet Hall (1799-1851), very possibly Adam Hall’s sister.
- The family’s names tie Mary (Jeffrey) Short to the Lyalls and the Halls [I]: her grandson Thomas
Lyall Hay (b. 1879, son of Isabella Short) and her grandchildren William Hall Short (b. 1877) and Mary
Jeffrey Short (b. 1875), children of Joseph William Short (
findagrave-short-family). - Andrew Jeffery, smith and feuar in Chirnside (1734-1810), with his wife Catherine Steel and their son Peter (b. about 1762): a smith, a few miles from Foulden, of the right age to be the father of William Jeffrey the blacksmith (b. 1772). Nothing on the stone names William; the link the FamilySearch tree makes is still unproven.
