What it says
Compiled genealogy, read in the archive.org full text. Used for the Hawkins and Mills families:
- James Hawkins (p. 139): born about 1604, “He deposed in court in 1660 that his age was about fifty-six”; a bricklayer or mason; the 1635 wage case and the 1642 censure; his will of 25 June 1669, proved 30 Apr 1670, naming wife Mary, son James and daughters, which “left a Bible for each of ten grandchildren at the age of twelve”; his widow’s transfer to her son James, 15 Apr 1671, of “a legacy from his kinfolk in Rhode Island,” and her deed of a Boston house and land to John Scottow, May 1671; three children of “Mary Hawkins” baptized at the First Church on 29 Apr 1666, the same day as three of her daughter Ruth Marshall’s. Their daughter Mary, born before 1638, married John Kneeland.
- John Mills (p. 178): applied to be made free 19 Oct 1630 and was sworn 6 Mar 1631/2; church member no. 33; the baptisms of his daughters Joy and Recompense in 1630, “being the first on our record”; 44 acres at Mount Wollaston (Braintree) in 1640; dismissed with his wife and son John to the Braintree church in 1641; town clerk of Braintree in 1653 (“Old John Mils who was somtime the keeper of this book”); died 5 July 1678; his will of 12 Jan 1677/8 said “his predecessors unto the third, if not the fourth generation” were ministers and recommended that one of his son John’s sons be fitted for the ministry. Sumner makes his wife Susanna the mother of his children.
- Mary (Mills) Hawkins (p. 179): born in England about 1616; thought to be the Mary Hawkins whose King’s Chapel gravestone gives her death on 12 Mar 1692, “age 76” (Savage’s reading).
