Mary Mills

Also Mary Hawkins

Probably the daughter of John Mills, who came in the Winthrop Fleet, and Catheryn Scotson, born in England about 1616/7. Probably the wife of James Hawkins of Boston and the mother of Mary Hawkins, who married John Kneeland. As a widow she deeded a Boston house in 1671; she probably died at Boston in 1692, aged 75, and lies in King's Chapel Burying Ground.

Notes

Wife of James Hawkins of Boston. Her father, of Boston and later Braintree, came in the Winthrop Fleet with his wife and five children (Sumner, p. 178).

“James of Mary Hawkins,” “Elizabeth of Mary Hawkins” and “Sarah of Mary Hawkins” were baptized at Boston’s First Church on the same day as three children of her daughter Ruth Marshall (Boston RC 9; Sumner gives the date as 29 Apr 1666). As a widow she transferred to her son James, on 15 Apr 1671, “a legacy from his kinfolk in Rhode Island,” and in May 1671 she deeded a Boston house and land to John Scottow (Sumner, p. 139).

  1. Mollie names her as the daughter of John Mills of the Winthrop Fleet and the wife of James Hawkins.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Mary Hawkins was a daughter of Col. James Hawkins and Mary Mills

Probable: Torrey and the Great Migration make her a daughter of James Hawkins, and John Mills's will (1678) names his daughter "Mary Hawkins". James was a Boston bricklayer (will 1669), and nothing shows he was a colonel. His parents Richard and Jane Hawkins are supported by the sons' petition of 1651.
