What it says
The family genealogy of 1963 (referred to in the book research as Leonard 1963). On Ralph’s origins (p. 9): “Nothing has yet come to light connecting Ralph Ellinwood with any English families.” The research files correct it in places, among them the death of Ralph Ellinwood II (1740/41, not 1728).
It was found on Ancestry (U.S., Family History Books, 456 images) in October 2026, and sent pp. 23-24 (images 26 and 33):
- Ralph II’s children by Martha (Rowlandson), with births and baptisms: Returne (22 May 1692; married Philip Piles, intentions 24 Aug 1712), Ralph (18 Apr 1694, bp. 22 Apr; “Died young”), Abigail (22 Jan 1696; perhaps the Abigail Ellinwood who died 20 Jan 1775, aged 78), Ebenezer (29 Aug 1697), Martha (7 Feb 1700; married Nehemiah Smith, 13 Dec 1724), Thomas (bp. 16 May 1703), Esther (bp. 24 Aug 1707; died 21 Feb 1715/6).
- “Ralph then married Sarah Woodbury in 1712, the intentions being dated February 3, 1711/2. She ‘owned ye Covenant’ of the Beverly Church and had her child baptized, June 21, 1713.” Their children: Sarah (5 Oct 1712), Israel (29 Sep 1714, bp. 3 Oct), Ralph (18 Aug 1716; married Eleanor Woodbury, 2 Jan 1734; died 21 Dec 1754), Ephraim (11 May 1718), Ichabod (6 Nov 1720), Esther (21 Jan 1722; married Edward Giles, 9 Jul 1744), Daniel (6 Jul 1724; died of smallpox at London, 1748), Abiel (12 Aug 1726; married Richard Thistle Jr., 24 Feb 1742).
- Israel (p. 24): “son of Ralph II and his third wife, Sarah Woodbury, was born in Beverly on September 29, 1714. He married Susanna Rand in Boston on March 18, 1741. The banns for Susanna’s marriage to Immanuel de Rivers had been published on May 10, 1739, but the marriage forbidden by Benjamin Lord.” Their children: Richard (7 Jan 1742; married Sarah Slater, 5 Jan 1766; “He may be the Richard E. who was commissioned master of the privateer schooner ‘Cleora’ bound for the French West Indies on June 9, 1777”), Susanna (8 Apr 1744; married Robert Hitchborne, 16 Jul 1765), Ralph (11 Sep 1745), Sarah (25 Aug 1747; married John Pulling, 3 Jan 1771). “Israel next married Hannah Perkins in Boston on November 9, 1752.” Leonard cites the Boston Record Commissioners’ marriages (Docs. 150, 101) and births (Doc. 43), F. O. Rand’s Genealogy of the Rand Family, and Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors, V.
Where it is wrong: Leonard makes Sarah Woodbury Ralph II’s third wife and her children his, with the Ralph born in 1694 dying young. Ralph II’s own will of 1741 calls Israel and his brother Ralph “my Two Grandsons”, children of “my Son Ralph Elinwood Decd” (record), and the 1743 division of Ralph III’s estate gives Israel the eldest son’s share (record). Leonard’s version is disproven (see Ralph Ellinwood, 1694). He also lists Finley and the Frankfort Ellingwoods among individuals he could not connect (pp. 382, 386, 390); the research files have since connected them.
