What it says

Calls Gideon a son of Elisha. Its Holbrook entry is muddled: it lists Gideon, Eliphalet and Jonathan as sons of both “Eliphalet 1st” and Elisha.

For the Harlow, Rider and Stephens families:

  • The Harlow Old Fort House (Part I pp. 321-322, from deeds): the town’s 1665 grant to William Harlow of “a little knowl or small parcel of land, lying near his now dwelling-house … to sett a new house upon”; after King Philip’s War “a grant of the timbers of the fort was made to William Harlow,” and Davis calls the connection between the fort timbers and the house “not an unwarrantable inference.” The house passed to Sgt. Harlow’s son Samuel in the 1692 division; Samuel released his share to “his brothers, William and John,” and John released to William, who had full title by 1728; in 1765 “John Harlow, one of the sons of William” sold it out of the family. It came back to Phebe (Stephens) Ellis’s relatives: her uncle Eleazer Stephens (1778-84), her brother Sylvanus by his marriage to Joseph Doten’s widow, and her nephew Lemuel Stephens (from 1822).
  • Rider (Part II p. 216): merges Samuel Rider Sr. of Yarmouth with his son Samuel Jr., giving the father’s daughters to the husband of Sarah Bartlett; gives Sarah’s children as Samuel (b. 18 Nov 1657, d. young) and John (b. about 1663/4).
  • Stephens (Part II pp. 252-253): Edward Stephens of Marshfield (living 1665), with children Edward, William, Elizabeth and Patience (m. John Phillips); Edward Stephens, son of Edward and Mary (Churchill), “m., 1747, Phebe, d. of William Harlow,” and their children Edward (1748), William (1752), Sylvanus, John, Samuel (“went to Maine”), Lemuel, Benjamin, Zacheus, Sally, “Phebe, m. George Ellis,” Mary and Elizabeth.
