Known from the research file’s reading. James Bate of Lydd, Kent, yeoman and jurat, married 6 June 1580 “Mary Martine(?)” and died 2 Mar 1614. Watkins queries the bride’s surname.

Part of the “Genealogical Gleanings in England” series: the will of Richard Bate of Lydd, jurat, 19 June 1656, proved 3 Apr 1657, which leaves “unto my mother Alice Bate in New England twelve pounds yearly during her life” (p. 268); Richard’s stone (“Here lieth the body of Richard Bate, gent, son of James and Alice Bate sometime of this towne,” “bayliff of this Corporation six times”) and the brass to Thomas Bate, jurat (d. 1578), “Full thre skore yeres and twelve / A Juratt of thys towne was I” (p. 268); and a Bate pedigree from the Lydd records (pp. 269-271): James Bate, yeoman, d. 2 Mar 1614, m. 6 June 1580 “Mary Martine(?)”; their son James “of Dorchester, bapt. 2 Dec. 1582; d. 1655; mar. lic. 13 Sept. 1603, to Alice Glover of Saltwood, b. 1583; d. 14 Aug. 1657,” whose children include “Mary, bapt. 21 Nov. 1619; mar. Hopestill Foster.” The same date, 21 Nov 1619, is given for the baptism of a Mary daughter of Thomas Bate (b. 1596). The grandchildren are named in the will of their grandfather James Bate, jurat, 1614.
