What it says

Answers to readers’ queries, signed “E. P. C. B.,” that is Ella Persis Chapin Browne, who had joined the DAR in 1900. The Ancestry tree attaches an image from this volume to Margaret Walbridge. Read in the archive.org full text in October 2026. Compiled, by a descendant.

  • “230. (1) Cummings.—Jerahmeel Cummings (not Jeremiah) and his wife Deborah lived in Windsor, Vermont, where eight children were born to them: Jane born Feb. 28, 1777; Jerahmeel born Jan. 24, 1779; Joseph born Jan. 15, 1781; John born Oct. 20, 1782; Asa born August 9, 1784; Bera born April 9, 1786; Hannah born Nov. 15, 1787; Polly born August 17, 1789. There may have been other children … Joseph Cummings married Hannah Converse, daughter of Col. Israel Converse of Randolph, Vermont and had seven children.”
  • “(2) Col. Israel Converse’s wife Hannah was the daughter of Ames or Amos Walbridge and Margaret his wife. And this Amos was the son of Amos Walbridge who was born April 9, 1693 at Preston, Conn. (Preston T. R.) and died at Stafford, Conn. (Stafford T. R.) and who married 1719 Theodia, daughter of Experience and Abigail (Williams) Porter. Amos Walbridge was Major from Stafford, Conn., in Rev. War, April 1775 to Jan. 1781.”
  • “Capt. Josiah Converse, Sr. married Hannah Sawyer (daughter of Joshua and Sarah Sawyer of Woburn, Mass.) Dec. 30th, 1706. He had eight children born in Woburn and one daughter Sarah born in Leicester, Mass. where he removed about 1727. He afterward removed to Brookfield, Mass. where his wife Hannah died June 18, 1747. Lieut. Josiah Converse, son of Capt. Josiah, married Eleanor Richardson in Leicester Dec. 27, 1731 [sic; 1732] and moved to Stafford, Conn. a year or two afterward. He was a Revolutionary soldier and the father of Col. Israel Converse. Major James Converse was the son of Lieut. James who came with his father, Deacon Edward Converse, from England, Wakerley Manor [not accepted here], with Gov. Winthrop 1630.”

Her note that Capt. Josiah and Hannah moved to Leicester about 1727, where their daughter Sarah was born, explains the “Josiah Convers, who lived in Leicester,” with a wife Hannah and a daughter Sarah born in November 1729, whom A. C. Vinton’s Converse genealogy and the Richardson Memorial took for a first marriage of Eleanor Richardson’s husband; see Josiah Converse (1710).
