Thomas Howes
One of the three original proprietors of Yarmouth and a deputy for six years from 1652; he died there in October 1665, leaving guns, a halbert, gold weights, bees, two Bibles and "Desparate Debts Due from the Indians." Probably the husband of the Mary who, as his widow, became the last wife of Gov. Thomas Prence, and probably the father of Jeremiah Howes, who married Sarah Prence.

Founder of the Yarmouth Howes family (compiled); from England, and at Yarmouth by 1639. His first record is at Salem, 25 Sept 1638, when as a planter of Lynn he lost trespass suits over damage done by his horses. With Anthony Thacher and John Crow he was one of the three “committees” (original proprietors) of Yarmouth. He was foreman of the grand jury in 1646 and a deputy for six years from 1652 (Hawes 1917, pp. 1-3, citing Essex Inst. Hist. Colls. 7:187-188 and PCR).
Of Yarmouth. His will of 26 Sept 1665 required his son Thomas to have his grandson Samuel taught “the Trad of a Cooper.” His inventory lists “3 guns a Case of Pistolls & holsters … one halbert a sword and belt,” “a paire of gold waightes,” “7 hives of bees,” “2 bibles & other bookes” and “Desparate Debts Due from the Indians” (MD 6:157-160). He died between 6 Oct 1665, when he acknowledged the will, and 18 Oct, the date of the inventory (MD 6:157-158).
His widow Mary became Gov. Thomas Prence’s last wife, by 1 Aug 1668. Elliot matched the “Troopers saddle” among the goods “mistris Mary Prence had before Marriage” to the saddle in Howes’s inventory (MD 6:230-235). Her 1676 war rate, as Prence’s widow, was £1 3s 4d (Hawes p. 2).
