Mary Collier

Also Mary Prence

Probably the daughter of William Collier of Duxbury, a Plymouth Colony magistrate, and the second wife of Gov. Thomas Prence, whom she married on 1 Apr 1635. She may have been the mother of his daughter Sarah, who married Jeremiah Howes, but that is not settled.

Notes

Second wife of Gov. Thomas Prence: “Mr Prence & Mary Collier was maried ye first of Aprill, 1635” (PCR 1, under 1 Apr 1635). Hawes calls her “Mary² (William¹) Collier of Duxbury.” Her father William Collier was a Plymouth Colony magistrate. Nathaniel Morton wrote that in 1633 “Mr. William Collier arrived with his Family in New-England” (New Englands Memoriall, 1669, p. 91); Mary was presumably part of that family (inferred).

Two of her sisters (compiled) had married the year before: the court record for June 1634 lists “Jobe Cole and Rebecka Colier, Loue Brewster & Sarah Collier” (PCR 1:30-31). Love Brewster had come on the Mayflower as a boy.

Elliot (1904) wrote that her death date “is very uncertain, but it must have been previous to December 8, 1662” (MD 6:234). Her daughter Jane Prence was born 1 Nov 1637, as recorded at Eastham by Jane’s husband Mark Snow (MD 6:230).

Whether she was the mother of Sarah (Prence) Howes is not settled (see Sarah’s file).
