Notes

Wife of James Cock of Matinecock and mother of James Cock (1674), grandfather of Mary (Cock) Frost. The Friends’ register lists “The children of James and Sarah Cock, borne Killingworth,” nine of them between 1655 and 1680 (source, p. 13). In 1699, as “Sarah Cock of ye Town of Matenacock, widow,” she was named as the mother of her son Henry when he declared his intention to marry Mary Feke (p. 18). She died at Matinecock in December 1715, and the compilers thought she was “doubtless interred in the ‘Underhill Burying Hill’ at Killingworth upon Matinecock where also the Fekes and Priars were laid” (p. 13).

Her maiden name is unknown. “Nothing is known regarding the ancestral relations of Sarah the wife of James Cock,” the compilers wrote (p. 12); in a later note they thought her “probably” a Clarke, sister of Samuel Clarke of North Sea, Southampton (p. 13). That is possible only.
