Robert Peck

Gentleman of Beccles, with houses and lands there and at Barsham. As the Peck genealogy has it, he was born in 1546 and died in 1593; he made his will in March 1592/3, sick of a pleurisy at Chelmsford, Essex. His wife was probably Hellen Babbs, and he was probably the father of Joseph Peck, baptized in 1587, who married Rebecca Clark.

Notes

Of Beccles, father of Joseph Peck (bp. 1587), per Ira Peck, who calls him a “gentleman” entitled to coat-armour. His children: Richard (d. without issue), Nicholas (m. Rachel Young), Robert (rector at Hingham, Norfolk), Joseph, Margaret, Martha and Samuel.

His will, dated March 1592/3, “in the xxxv yere” of Elizabeth, was made while he was “sick and weake of body at chemisfforde in the cowntye of Essex … of a pluresye.” It gives his wife Hellen, “in consideration of the paiment of my debts the bringinge up of my children and the finishinge of the houses which I am now in buildinge,” his houses and lands in Beccles and Barsham for her life, and gives his son Richard “my houses where in I dwell in Blibergate street” (Ira Peck pp. 21-23).

Mollie Pfeiffer gives his wife as “–– Norton”; Ira Peck says Hellen Babbs, and “Norton” appears in the visitation only as the married name of a Margaret Peck. Mollie makes his son Joseph “a lineal descendant for twenty-one generations of John Peck of Belton.” The printed visitations she cites begin with Richard Peck of Wakefield and have no Beccles branch, and Ira Peck says the British Museum pedigree lacks “the two last families, those of Robert and Joseph, which are added to it.” His place in the Peck family of Wakefield is therefore unproven.

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie calls him a gentleman of Beccles entitled to arms, and quotes his will leaving his wife Hellen his houses and lands in Beccles to pay his debts, bring up the children and finish the house he was building.

Joseph Peck's father Robert Peck of Beccles, England, was a gentleman entitled to coat-armor, of much distinction. ... the finishing of the house which I am now building, all my houses, lands tenements, meadows, pastures etc. in Beccles.

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
Robert Peck of Beccles married ---- Norton

Ira Peck's genealogy (1868) gives Joseph's mother as Hellen Babbs, daughter of Nicholas Babbs; Norton appears in the visitation only as the married name of a Margaret Peck. Mollie herself quotes Robert's will to "my wife Hellen (Babbs)" on p. 155A.

  • Unlikely
Joseph Peck was 21 generations from John Peck of Belton

The visitations she cites (Harleian Society 2 and 16) begin with Richard Peck of Wakefield and have no Belton and no Beccles branch. Ira Peck admits the last two generations, Robert and Joseph, "are added to" the pedigree. Robert of Beccles's place in the Wakefield family is unproven.
