Notes

Wife of Robert Peck of Beccles and mother of Joseph Peck (bp. 1587), per Ira Peck. Mollie Pfeiffer gives Robert’s wife as “–– Norton.”

Her husband’s will (March 1592/3) made her “sole executrix” and left her his houses and lands at Beccles and Barsham for life, with power to sell his woods or meadows in Barsham. It asked her to have care of their children “And also of Joane Babb & Elisabeth Babb” (Ira Peck pp. 21-23), presumably her kin (inference).

Mollie's typescript· 1 passage · 1 claim checked

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about her checked against the records.

  1. Her husband Robert Peck's will left her his property in Beccles; Mollie, who elsewhere gives his wife as "---- Norton," takes Hellen for a second wife and an heiress.

I give to my wife Hellen (Babbs), my welle-beloved wife, in consideration of the payment of my debts, the bringing up of my children ... This sounds as if Robert married a second wife who was an heiress!

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
Robert Peck of Beccles married ---- Norton

Ira Peck's genealogy (1868) gives Joseph's mother as Hellen Babbs, daughter of Nicholas Babbs; Norton appears in the visitation only as the married name of a Margaret Peck. Mollie herself quotes Robert's will to "my wife Hellen (Babbs)" on p. 155A.
