Notes
Hanged at Salem as a witch, 19 Aug 1692; brother of Abigail (Proctor) Varney. Thirty-one Ipswich neighbors petitioned for him and his wife Elizabeth in August 1692, among them “Tho. Low Sanor,” “Thomas Varny” and “Jno Wise.” The Ipswich death “Martha, w. John, June 13, 1659” most likely belongs to his first wife.
Mollie's typescript
Brother of Abigail (Proctor) Varney, he married Elizabeth Thorndike, moved to Salem and was hanged as a witch in 1692, though thirty-two Ipswich neighbours petitioned for him.
His son John (2) brother of Abigail (Proctor) Varney, married Elizabeth Thorndike, removed to Salem, where he was executed for a witch. ... It availed nothing, with Hathorn for Judge and Cotton Mather standing by!

Checked against the records
- ProvenAbigail's brother John Proctor was executed at Salem as a witch
Proved. Abigail Varney's deposition of 1673 speaks of "her father" and "her mother Prockter", and in 1679 her husband testified at "the house which was formerly his father Procter's" (Essex Quarterly Courts 5:195, 7:218). John Proctor was hanged at Salem on 19 Aug 1692.

Confirmed. The Ipswich petition of August 1692 judged John and Elizabeth Proctor "Innocent of the crime objected" (Salem Witchcraft Papers No. 107). It has 31 signers, not 32, among them the Low ancestors Deacon Thomas Low ("Tho. Low Sanor") and Thomas Varney, and Rev. John Wise.
