Johann Kuchenmeister

Probably the father of Franz (Frank) Kuchenmeister, who married Margaret Borrell, and the husband of Magdalena Schmidt. Born at Würzburg, where he married, he came to Minnesota about 1858 and pre-empted a farm near Delano, Wright County, helped build the first Catholic church there, and died in Franklin Township in 1896, "in his 79th year" by one death notice and 73 by another.

"In his 79th year" in the Delano Eagle's notice (12 Mar 1896), so born between March 1817 and March 1818, close to the tree's date, and born at Wurtzburg; "age 73 years" in the other Delano paper's notice the next day, which would put his birth about 1822-23. To decide.

Notes

Frank Kuchenmeister’s father, who brought his family from Bavaria to Wright County, Minnesota, by ox team from St. Paul. He was one of the men who, when the neighbours came home from the Civil War in 1865, “started with the work and erected the first Catholic church building on our cemetery” near Delano, and on 1 March 1874 he was put on the building committee for the church in the town, St. Peter’s, whose cornerstone was laid that June (source). His son Valentine was still a pew-holder there in 1915. His death notice calls him “one of the early settlers in Delano”; he had lived for some years on his farm four miles south of the town, and left “a wife and several grown children and numerous grand children” (source).

The Delano Eagle of 12 March 1896 called him “another of our old pioneers,” who died of catarrhal consumption “in his 79th year”: “He was born in Wurtzburg, Germany, and there married. He removed to Minnesota about 38 years ago and pre-empted the farm where he died. He leaves a wife who is one year his junior, and four children.” He was buried that morning from St. Peter’s church, “of which he was a faithful member” (record).
