Jeanne Verbeau

Also Gian Wibooe · Jeanne Deyo

Probably the wife of Chrétien Deyo, the patriarch of New Paltz, and the mother of Pierre Deyo the patentee, though that she was the mother of his children is assumed rather than shown. She is known from one record, as a witness at the baptism of Pierre's son Christian at the Brooklyn Dutch Church in 1681, where the minister wrote her name Gian Wibooe.

Notes

Wife of Chrétien Deyo, the patriarch of New Paltz. She is known from one record: the baptism of her grandson Christian, son of Pierre Deyo, entered in the Brooklyn Dutch Church book, “April 17, 1681, (child) Christien: Pieter Dujoo, Angeniet Nickie (parents); witnesses, Christen Dujoo, Gian Wibooe.” Hasbrouck reads the witness as Jeanne Verbeau, “corrupted by the Dutch domine,” and takes the record as proof that Pierre was Christian’s son, and that Christian “was married in his European home and brought with him to this country a wife and several children” (source). That she was the mother of those children is assumed rather than shown.
