Notes
Married Joseph Briscoe at Boston, 30 Jan 1651/2 (NEHGR 178). She was the only daughter of John and Susanna Compton, of Roxbury and Boston (NEHGR 178:6, 26). After Joseph drowned she married (2) Abraham Busby, baker, on 23 Sept 1659, before Governor John Endicott.
In 1683 she and Busby deeded her son Joseph Briscoe a lot fronting the street to Roxbury (now Washington Street), in settlement for his grandmother Susanna Compton’s estate, which they had “improved to their own use” (Suffolk Deeds 12:394, quoted in NEHGR 178:26).
Open questions
- Her father’s origin. Smallhope Bigg’s will of 1638 names a “John Compton” among his kinsfolk “now resident in New England,” and John Bigg’s will a John Compton who “went from Cranbrook” (Waters, Gleanings 1:21-23); Waters’s editor took him to be the Roxbury settler. If he was Abigail’s father, the Briscoes were connected to the Biggs before Rebecca Briscoe married into the Foster family. Not yet checked.
