The sit-down men marching in Vancouver, June 1938
About it
A long file of young men in caps and work clothes walks the sidewalk of a downtown street, one with a coat over his arm, past a Coca-Cola sign and a “25¢ Taxi Drive” sign. The Vancouver Public Library catalogues the Province‘s negative as “Marching demonstrators from the Post Office and Art Gallery sit in,” June 1938; the copy on Wikimedia Commons was first described, from the library’s database, as the men marching back to the Relief Project Workers’ Union’s headquarters after the post office riot. These were the single unemployed men of the relief-camp generation, most of them young, whose month-long occupation ended on Bloody Sunday.
