summary
Daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence, whose will left her "my bigest beer bowle," and wife of Jeremiah Howes; her last stepmother, Mary, widow of Thomas Howes, was probably also her husband's mother. Probably the mother of Sarah (Howes) Mayo. She died on 3 Mar 1706/7 in her 60th year; her own mother was perhaps Mary Collier, perhaps Apphia (Quicke) Freeman.

note
Died 1634; Prence married Mary Collier on 1 Apr 1635, years before Sarah's birth.

Gravestone: "Sarah Hows Wife to Jeremiah Hows Departed this life March ye 3d 1706 in ye 60th Year of Her age" (NEHGR 59:217). Her father's will of 1673: "Item I give to my Daughter Sarah howes my bigest beer bowle" (MD 3:204). On 10 June 1676 Gov. Prence's heirs, among them "Jeremiah Howes and his wife Sarah" and "the widow Mary Prence," sold land of his estate (Hawes p. 20, citing the Supplement to Pope's Pioneers).

Her line gives a Prence descent but no Mayflower one: Prence came on the Fortune, and Patience Brewster died before Sarah was born. The Plimoth Plantation sketch says it "is not certain which wife was the mother" of Judith, Elizabeth and Sarah. Elliot (NEHGR 59:218) adds that "the name Patience is never met with in the early branches of the Howes descendants." Her last stepmother, Mary, widow of Thomas Howes, was also her husband's mother, as Elliot showed. Capt. Thomas Howes's will of 15 Jan 1675/6 asks that "my Mother Prence Injoy without molestation During her Naturall life the house shee Now lives in" (MD 6:162, 233). Whichever later wife was Sarah's mother, Patience Brewster had died in 1634.

Open questions

  • Was her mother Mary Collier or Apphia (Quicke) Freeman? If the latter, the Colliers drop out of the line.
