Son of Capt. James and Ann (Riggs) Ginn. Born at or near Orrington, Maine, by the compiled lists; no birth record has been found. Rufus Buck calls him "the only surviving child" by 1857, "extensively known as the best ship-builder on the river." Brigham's "William H. Ginn, a shipbuilder of Ellsworth," named as Sally Ginn's father, may be a garbling of his name.
