summary
A native of Prestonpans, East Lothian, she married Alexander Pattullo at Inveresk in 1806 and in 1823, as a Caledon local history has it, brought their children out to join him on his farm at Caledon, Upper Canada. Widowed in 1828, she died there in 1852, aged 83 by her gravestone. Mother of Halkett Pattullo and great-grandmother of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood.

note
Her gravestone has her "native of Prestonpans" and "in the 84 [?] year of her age" at her death in August 1852 (83, as the transcription has it), so born 1768 or 1769, as the FamilySearch tree has it (1768). WikiTree has 3 May 1771, from a baptism at Prestonpans, 5 May 1771, of Jean, daughter of James Watson and Jean Dickson (FamilySearch XY2G-V2K): hers if the stone overstates her age, which the birth of her son Thomas in 1817 makes likely, or a namesake's.

note
Brought the children out in 1823 to join her husband on his farm at Caledon (Trimble's Caledon history).

Great-grandmother of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood. Born at Prestonpans, she married Alexander Pattullo at Inveresk with Musselburgh in October 1806, and is named as the mother in the indexed baptisms of their sons James (1807), Halkett (1809) and Thomas "Pitully" (1817) (source). Her husband went out to Upper Canada in 1820, and in 1823 she followed with the children, James, Thomas, Halkett, Margaret and Jane, as Trimble's Caledon history tells it. She was widowed in December 1828, when Alexander was killed by a falling tree, and lost her son Thomas in 1849. She died at Caledon on 8 August 1852, a few weeks before or after the birth there of her granddaughter Mary, Halkett's youngest child, and is named on the stone Halkett put up in 1855 (source). WikiTree notes that she is not found in the 1851-52 census with any of her children.

Her eldest son James, at his second marriage in 1879, gave her name as "Mary" [?] Watson (record).

Research: Ruth Short's ancestry: the archive, the Ancestry tree, WikiTree and FamilySearch compared, Ellingwood line: the wives' families (Pattullo and Short, Adams and Deyoe, Rice and Sylvester).

Open questions

  • Her birth: 1768-69 (her gravestone's age) or 1771 (the Prestonpans baptism WikiTree gives her). If the 1771 baptism is hers, her parents were James Watson and Jean Dickson. The Prestonpans register for 1768-1771 would show whether there is another Jean Watson to choose between.
