Lawyer and county magistrate of Groton Manor in Suffolk, father of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts Bay and of Anne (Winthrop) Fones, through whom the Frosts descend. "He was a lawyer and county magistrate" (source, p. 347).
He kept a diary, printed in the first volume of the Winthrop Papers, which records the life of his household at Groton: on 23 February 1604/5 "T[homas] F[ones] came to Groton and was maried to my daughter Anne the xxvth. and they departed toward London the xxvijth day of February 1604" (source, 1:88), and on a Sunday in January 1609/10 "my daughter [Anne] Fones was d[eliuere]d of her seconde daughter," his granddaughter Elizabeth (1:104). The same diary records "Sarah Winthrop was married to John Froste" and, in 1603, the death of "Sarah my cosen Frostes wife"; nothing connects this English John Frost with William Frost of Oyster Bay (source, pp. 347-348).
He married first, in 1574, Alice Still, who died with her first child in 1577, and second, on 20 February 1579/80, Anne Browne of Edwardstone. Their children included Anne (1586), who married Thomas Fones, and John (1588), the governor.
