What it says

A compiled database. Its underlying records have not been seen here.

James Reed, born about 1765, died about 1841, Clay County, Kentucky. Father: Hugh Reed Sr. (died before December 1786, Rowan/Burke County, NC). It gives:

  • 1783, Rowan County NC: State grant #522, 130 acres on Dutchmans Creek.
  • 1786, Rowan County NC: James named in the sale of Hugh Reed Sr.’s estate (187 acres on Second Creek).
  • 1800 Ashe County NC census: “free black” (the census column is “other free”).
  • 1801, Ashe County: bought land from Spencer Mullins (Deed Book A, pp. 370-371).
  • 1802, Ashe County: sold land to Stephen Reed (Deed Book B, p. 375).
  • c. 1811, Ashe County: land transactions with William Hollinsworth and Eli Cleveland.
  • 1820 Clay County KY census: “free colored male 45+.”
  • 1841, Clay County: estate appraised at about $800, with parts sold to “Mrs Reid,” Samuel Reid and William Reid.
  • Children include a Martha Patsy Reed, born 1810.

The research treats the birth year as at the edge of James’s census range (c. 1766-75), the 1783 grant (which needs a man born by about 1762) and perhaps the other Rowan entries as possibly another James Reed’s, and the 1841 estate as fitting only the reading in which Mary Reed’s father died in Clay County.
