What it says
Read through the archive.org texts in the Flynn research pass
(research/dwyer/Flynn_Family_Connections.md, October 2026). That this “Justice Flynn” of St. Joseph
is James M. Flynn is all but certain: he was appointed a justice of the peace in February 1911
(newspaper-flynn-justice-of-the-peace-1911), and a St. Joseph feature of about 1915 calls him
“Justice James M. Flynn” (source).
- Sedalia Democrat, 13 June 1911: on 12 June Justice Flynn married Miss Carlota Conklin, 20, of Topeka, to Rinyech Oda, a Japanese merchant running a stand at Lake Contrary, who before taking out the licence “asked if there was a law against the marriage of a Japanese and white girl.”
- New York Clipper, 16 Mar 1912: on 9 March he married L. Francis Gottschalk, stage manager of Darrell H. Lyall’s “At Sunrise” company, and Josephine H. Wolsey of the same company (https://archive.org/details/per_new-york-clipper_new-york-clipper_1912-03-16_60_5).
- The Philatelic West, 1911: “John Harnois, clerk in the office of Justice Flynn,” called a meeting to found a stamp collectors’ association at St. Joseph (https://archive.org/details/philatelicwest1911nebr).
- Maryville Daily Democrat-Forum, 2 Aug 1913: Frank Bradbury, 17, was “arraigned before Justice Flynn” at St. Joseph on a charge of embezzlement (https://archive.org/details/maryville-daily-democrat-forum-1913-08-02).
A different St. Joseph man, John M. Flynn, was a grain merchant (the J. M. Flynn Grain Co.); a “J. M. Flynn” in business sources is probably him.
