What it says
A feature with a group photograph captioned “Mr. and Mrs. William C. Flynn and Children”: the parents and eleven children. The masthead and date are not on the clipping. The print is small and blurred; read from enlargements of a screenshot, with gaps marked:
HERE is a group of thirteen, the members of which do not have many hard luck stories to tell. Even to look at them is enough to drive away any thought that a large family is not a blessing. The likeness is that of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Flynn and their eleven children. Their friends think that to so successfully raise a large family on a salary … is enough to entitle them to a medal from “T. R.,” but Flynn is not of his politics, though he has worked under “Teddy” as a mail carrier in the St. Joseph office. Flynn belongs to the opposite side of the political fence, however. The father of Flynn is Justice James M. Flynn, who is now a candidate for [the] nomination on the Democratic ticket for police judge. …
“Who says Missouri is not a fruit growing country?” William C. Flynn and family live at 1901 Holman street. The children are still all under the parental roof. The oldest son is through school and now employed, and the others are still going to school. Although Flynn is drawing the salary of a mail carrier from the government, he is also allowed … for his automobile, which is used in the delivery of the parcel post.
Date. Not on the clipping. Eleven children, the youngest Beulah (born February 1914) a baby or toddler in the picture, and the eldest, James (born 1896), out of school and working; parcel post delivery by car (parcel post began in 1913): about 1915. “T. R.” is Theodore Roosevelt, known for praising large families. The clipping is in the Gallery.
